Overview
Description
Examines people’s behaviors and attributes that others come to believe are deviant. Reviews sociological theories that account for deviance. Explores different forms of social control that define and aim to prevent and inhibit deviance. Analyzes deviance as both a violation of social norms and a possible prelude to social change. The importance of deviance and social control theory to crime and criminal justice will be reviewed. Race, gender, and social class will be considered as factors that influence people’s perceptions of people as deviant and how those people are treated. (Same course as CJ 3640).Prerequisite: Any 2000-level Criminal Justice or Sociology course.
