Description

This course will introduce students to the field of communityart. Students will examine ideas and issues associated withcommunity art practice through readings, discussions, writing,and artmaking. Students will learn about and discuss examples ofestablished work in the community arts field, including: publicart, collaborative art, art that promotes healing, and creativeyouth development projects. Students will also view and discussexamples of public art during a fieldtrip to MIT’s Public ArtCollection or a fieldtrip to see another community art projecthappening during the semester in and around Boston. The coursewill culminate in a hands-on group community art project,that will require students to apply the models and approachesto community art that have been studied. This course meets theGeneral Education Arts Breadth and Reading/Writing Enhancementrequirements.Prerequisites: WRIT 1200 or WRIT 1400, WRIT 1500 and SA 1800or SA 1770 or SA 1775.
