Description

This course introduces students to health assessment and the role of the nurse as planner and provider of patient centered care. The goal is to acquaint students with the skills and techniques necessary to accurately collect data in order to promote, maintain, or restore health. Emphasis is placed on normal findings across developmental levels with common deviations and at-risk populations highlighted. Functional, spiritual, psychosocial, cultural and physiological assessments are discussed, as well as the impact of the environment and life choice on health status. Students will develop a beginning competence with the physical examination techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation within the co-requisite NSG 2012. Interviewing and history taking are presented within the context of the communication process. Accountablity for results of assessment using clinical judgment and critical thinking is emphasized. This course meets the wellness requirement.Prerequisites: BIOL 1075, BIOL 1175, BIOL 1085, BIOL 1185, CHEM 1001, CHEM 1002.Corequisites: NSG 2011 and NSG 2012*.*NSG 2002-1 (CRN 95652) MUST register for NSG 2011-C1 (CRN 95660). NSG 2002-2 (CRN 95653) MUST register for NSG 2011-C2 (CRN 95661).
