Description

This course will take a trauma-informed approach to work withinthe criminal justice field, focusing on the potential for restorativeprocesses and outcomes. This work includes those who comeinto contact with the justice system (the overlapping groupsof people who create harm and those who experience it), as wellas professionals who work within the justice system. This coursewill explore the impact of interpersonal and structural trauma inthe justice system, exploring trauma-informed care through amulti-disciplinary lens. Students will examine the intersectionsbetween trauma and mental illness. Importantly, this coursewill centralize restorative justice principles as a method ofaddressing harms created through trauma. There will bea particular focus on how the justice system can facilitateprogramming to promote healing and resiliency both in directservices and through policy considerations. Empirical research onprogramming will be discussed.
